Perhaps one of the greatest gifts that all humans possess is creativity. It lives within all of us as a spark of inspiration, an idea that seems to come out of nowhere or simply what appears as we navigate our lives. Many people are unaware that they even have it within them. Maybe they were taught to focus on the practical. Perhaps they were told at some young age they didn’t have talent, but this is a lie. A very destructive lie that in some cases can bind a person’s creative force throughout a lifetime.
The reality is that creativity is our connection to the divine. From putting a plank over a stream to cross over, to a mesmerizing symphony or a protest poster. Creativity is at the core of who we are. If we did not recognise this, we would still be staring at a rock wondering how to make a wheel. Even worse, the wheel would not even occur to us!
There is no force more powerful, influential and imperative than love, and creativity is the gift of love that everyone has to offer.
If you think about every decade you can remember, it is painted in your mind with music, art, photography, poetry and everything in between. It is the backdrop of your life, the inspiration and the force that helped choose your path. It is freedom in itself and it is a gift that is truly unique to you.
Just as the turbulence of the 60’s spawned the peace movement and expanded consciousness in music, art, thought and course corrected the very social fabric of the time, we can see how necessary our connection to the divine is needed now.
Many creative projects seem to go unnoticed in their time, but that has never stopped the creative force. This energy wants to emerge regardless of outcome. It is expression, which speaks to us in our hearts, not our heads and it is the open heart in which all life expands, grows and merges with the divine.
I am writing this not because I believe that creativity will ever cease to be, but rather to suggest that all of us need to open ourselves up to the opportunity of creative expression in our lives. This is one of the greatest joys in life. Why would we subject ourselves to all of this negative information, greed and corruption we see in the world, when we are born with the power to change it? Not with force or hatred of others we disagree with, but as softly and subtly as a flower blossoms. As naturally as a caterpillar flys off as a beautiful butterfly.
Look at nature. Look around in your home and see everything you love. It was all born of creativity. The creativity that is within all of us.
