I use the terms speakers and authors because most non-duality speakers don’t consider themselves “teachers”. This is because they are aware that they are not saying anything that you don’t already know intuitively. These “teachings” are more like reminders, or pointers, pointing to the truth that is within you already.
There are many questions that arise with non-duality speakers. There are many different approaches, different focuses and sometimes these speakers say things that seem to contradict what they may have said a week ago.
I am writing about this because these issues that come up should not be any sort of deterent to your individual path. It’s important to remember that what someone needs to hear at a specific time in their lives, may not resonate with you at this time in your life. This is not a problem unless you cling to your “teacher” as a guru, or someone you choose as an exclusive source for you. I don’t recomend this approach.
You may certainly have something to learn from one teacher, but eventually you will likely need to widen your scope and open yourself up to new ways of experiencing non-duality.
For example, some speakers talk about emptiness and formlessness and never mention the heart or even love. Does this mean they are incorrect or false in their teaching? Certainly not. Each speaker offers their wisdom and experiences in different ways, and at a certain point in your journey, you may hear the exact thing that you need to hear, but this should not close you off from listening to other speakers.
I’m saying this based on my own experience…
I began looking into a deeper spiritualtiy than my christian upbringing sometime in my early 30’s. I studied and compared religions and became interested in the common underlying themes that most religions have. I read Alan Watts books, who has done extensive work in this area. I became aligned with Buddhism and joined a Buddhist temple for several years because it seemed to focus on deeper areas of spirituality and the teachings resonated with me at the time. I studied Zen and have a huge collection of Zen books. My first introduction to Zen was a book called Roots and Wings, by Rev. Sri Rajneesh, now known as Osho. He was speaking from a different place. A deeper understanding, which compelled me to look further.
I can’t remember when I became familiar with non-duality but the resonance was so strong, I listened to any speakers I could. There is a point to which I recognised what was truth and what was not. Not all non-duality speakers are speaking from truth, but it becomes pretty easy to spot them and even easier to move on.
I’m grateful to the many speakers and authors whos words resonated with me and because I love the topic, I still listen to several of them today, and for those that are interested, I will include links to their pages below.
The point is, if you want to gain a deeper understanding about what you really are, you will have to find it within yourself. Not in your thinking mind or your body or your emotions. It is not an intellecual pursuit, which is the common way we have learned things. So pointers, resonance and intuition are needed instead.
Here are some speakers I highly recommend and I wish you well on your soverign journey!
